By Freeman Bouwkamp

Nobody likes to get sick. Most of us take measures to protect our bodies from catching a virus and ending up with influenza or a bad cold. If you find yourself around someone who has the sniffles, no doubt you will go to great lengths to stay as far away from that person as you can. A lot of places you visit will now have a pump-bottle of hand sanitizer on the counter for visitors to use. I've seen this frequently at doctors offices and even grocery stores. Do you take some dietary supplements each day? If so, you are among the many who purchase mega amounts of these supplements. Each day, in newspapers, magazines, and on the internet, you can find countless reports and articles on steps you can take to keep your health intact. The problem is that we aren't always aware of the best superfoods to eat for boosting our immune system so we stay healthy. All we've been taught is to eat a healthy diet that is balanced in all the food groups. If you want to build a strong immune system - and who doesn't? - include the following superfoods in your menu each week.

One easy superfood to add to your diet is wheat germ. It will boost your immune system. Wheat germ contains zinc, which is a crucial ingredient for the health of your immune system.

Pork chops may not be the first food that comes to mind when someone is discussing superfoods, but it can be very beneficial to maintaining a healthy immune system. Of course, this won't impress vegans or vegetarians, but it's a fact, nevertheless. Eating six ounces of pork chops a day can help prevent you from losing weight. A person who is sick can stop the common weight loss that occurs during an illness by eating pork chops. Some folks might groan at the thought of eating pork chops every day. The good news for people with cancer, is that pork chops provide a lot of selenium. Selenium is a natural antioxidant which fights cancer. Thankfully there are lots of really great ways to prepare pork chops so you can still get a fair amount of variety.

Vegetable juice is a great source of vitamins, minerals, immune boosting agents and fluids. Do you remember watching the V-8 Juice commercials where they tell us that adding veggie juice to our diet is good for our body? Those commercials aren't wrong. There are other options, however, than V-8 Juice. You can blend up your own vegetable juice at home. Folks who blend their own juices say they like the freedom to change their recipes and add whatever veggies strike their fancy each day. Adding veggie juices to your daily routine helps ensure that you also get the vitamins, fluids, and minerals that your body needs to be in optimum health.

A delicious way to boost your immune system is to eat baked sweet potatoes - a great superfood. Sweet potatoes are full of beta-carotene which helps keep your immune system healthy and strong Carrots are another food that contain a lot of beta-carotene, but you will find more versatility with the sweet potato. Mashed, baked, or included in other foods, you won't find a superfood as flavorful as the sweet potato. Cut them into 1/4 strips and make french fries. They're delightful! Mashed sweet potatoes instead of mashed potatoes are a nice treat for your family. The different methods you can discover for preparing sweet potatoes are practically endless.

There are all sorts of great immune system superfoods out there that you can eat. You know that you need to eat a healthy and balanced diet anyway, why not choose the foods that help your immune system stay healthy at the same time?
